Maserati Granturismo MC concept: first official photos

Maserati GranturismoThis is one car that apparently won’t be at Paris, the stunning new Maserati MC Concept. Essentially a racing version of the Granturismo S, this MC could well become the next Trofeo car for the one-make series, while also being made available to GT3 and GT4 customers.

So what has Maserati done to the Granturismo S to turn it into the MC Concept?

Maserati Granturismo MC conceptLet’s start with what we can see. The front bumper is all-new, with two additional air intakes and a front splitter, while the revised bonnet also features an air inlet and two vents. Vents also appear behind the front wheelarches while the rear features a larger spoiler (to balance the front splitter) and repositioned exhaust pipes. Those exhausts also feature new racing cats and silencers (that we hope aren’t particularly quiet).

Combined with a remapped 4.7-litre V8 and a new induction system, power climbs from 433 to 444bhp, while torque is also up a smidgen, from 362 to 376lb ft.

The power gains don’t sound that much.

They don’t, but then the existing Trofeo cars only feature lightly modified engines. What counts on these cars is the weight, or the lack of, which seriously enhances the performance. With a stripped-out interior and Lexan replacing all the glass, Maserati claims the MC Concept tips the scales at less than 1400kg. A standard Granturismo S weighs 1880kg

Pretty impressive. What else?

The Maserati Racing Department, responsible for the MC Concept, has fitted an FIA-spec roll cage, a racing bucket seat and a six-point harness. The brakes are now bigger, while enormous slick tyres (13-inch wide at the rear, 12in at the front) should make a difference to lap times.
